Her mother died of illness when she was six, and she has been living with her father ever since. Since her father is a cross-dressing alchoholic, she quickly got used to doing all of the chores herself. Despite her father's incompetence, she did care about him, in her own strange way. Haruhi went to an ordinary public middle school. Her good nature and looks made her very popular with the boys there; she usually got a confession every month or so. However, being as oblivious to romance as she is, she almost never actually noticed them. Life changed for Haruhi fairly drastically once she started high school. She managed to get a scholarship to get into the illustrious Ouran High School, populated almost entirely by the fabulously wealthy. In fact, Haruhi was by far the poorest student at the school. Trying to find a place to study in peace (all of the study rooms were filled with rich people being loud and sociable), Haruhi stumbled upon the Host Club, a group of dreamy men who spend their time entertaining women. Having just cut her hair short, and not being able to afford the school uniform, the Host Club mistook Haruhi for a man. When she accidentally broke a vase worth 8,000,000 yen, she was strongarmed into becoming the club's slave, supposedly until graduation. This ended when the Club President, Tamaki, discovered Haruhi's hidden adorableness, and made her a Host on the spot. Over the course of the next couple days, the various Hosts figured out Haruhi's secret one by one, with Tamaki being the last (not realizing her gender until he walked in on her changing). When confronted about this secret, Haruhi admitted to being a girl, but said that she didn't mind sitting around chatting with girls while being mistaken for a boy, so she decided to remain a host in order to pay off her 8-million-yen debt, keeping her real gender a secret from the rest of the school. (I'm not going to detail every single adventure she had as a Host, but I'll outline the more important ones.) At one point, the Host Club took a vacation to the vice president Kyouya's private beach house. After discovering that Haruhi was the only girl present not terrified of a millipede that Tamaki accidentally found, the Host Club turned the vacation into a game of Find Haruhi's Weakness. They tried creating various scary situations, but none of them had any effect on her. Eventually, near the end of the evening, Haruhi challenged a pair of guys who were picking on someone, and ended up almost getting beat up. Tamaki scolded her for thinking that a girl could stand against men, leaving the atmosphere between them incredibly bitter for the remainder of the evening. The weather that night revealed that the one thing Haruhi was afraid of was thunderstorms, which Tamaki helped assure her through. At a later date, a club of incredibly fabulous women from the all-girls Lobelia Academy tried to abduct Haruhi and convince her to transfer schools. While this escalated into a full-out war between the Zuka Club and the Host Club, a series of increasing offenses (culminating in discovering that Kyouya sold her favorite pen in an auction for 30,000 yen), Haruhi stormed out of the club room, leaving Tamaki certain that Haruhi was going to quit the club for good. Unfortunately, he came up with a plan - Tamaki and the others elaborately crossdressed so as to convince Haruhi that she could experience both genders at Ouran instead of just one. Upon seeing this, Haruhi broke into uncontrollable laughter, eventually recovering enough to mention that she never had any intention of leaving the Host Club. That summer, Haruhi user her break to work a part-time job in another town. Not having told anything to the Host Club, they (Tamaki, mostly) flew into a panic and ended up tracking her down and showing up unannounced at the pension she was working at. While they were there, Haruhi's old classmate Arai showed up by coincidence. While they caught up on old times, one of the other hosts, Hikaru, remaked loudly and jealously about how Arai was obviously hitting on Haruhi. His response was, much to everyone's surprise, that he had already been rejected by her. This surprised even Haruhi, who has completely failed to notice the confession, misinterpreting it as an offer to apply to the same high schools. After giving Arai a year-late apologetic rejection, an unusual series of events led to Haruhi going on a date with Hikaru. It went disastrously, with Hikaru leaving her alone in the middle of a thunderstorm, but the rest of the Host Club was able to talk enough sense into him to get him to go back for her. Personality: Haruhi is a very indifferent and down-to-earth person. One of the traits that stands out the msot about her is her lack of gender consciousness. She doesn't really care about the differences between the sexes, and thus can go for extended periods of time without someone figuring out her gender. Harui can be incredibly perceptive or incredibly non-perceptive, depending on the situation. She is a very good judge of a person's character; when someone else has a problem, she can usuallly see to the heart of it almost immediately (nor is she afraid to call it to attention - a little bit of brutal honesty never hurt anyone, right?). She's a bit less perceptive when it comes to her own life, though, particularly when romance is involved. It is almost impossible to get her to realize that someone likes her, even if they've asked her out. Haruhi is almost fearless, to the point of recklessness. She will stand up for someone even when threatened with physical violence, despite not being even remotely athletic. Things that terrify normal people don't affect her at all. Her only real fear is thunderstorms. Despite her usual ambivalent attitude, Haruhi really is a caring person. No matter how much she gets frustrated by her friends, she stays with them for a reason. When she's happy, most people around her are happy (when she's angry, her mood can sour milk from across the room). She has a habit of looking directly into the eyes of whoever she's speaking with.
